Demolition began and has moved quickly this week on the future site of The Lofts at Parkhill, a four-story, mixed-use building that will have stores and apartments on Sixth Street at 12th Avenue, confirmed James Drew, vice president of Clark Drew Construction.
Above, a house that was on 12th Avenue was on a truck Wednesday afternoon, ready to be moved while other demo goes on in another part of the lot, shown below.
“One home was deemed acceptable for relocation by Telkamp housemovers and is being moved to Sinai. The other homes were unfit to move. Habitat for Humanity was able to remove fixtures and materials from those homes to be re-purposed,” Drew said in an e-mail to the Register.
He expected clearing the site will take about a week, and foundations will be started after that.
“We plan on having the building enclosed by late fall, work on interior finishes over the winter, and complete the site work during the summer of next year,” Drew said.
The project was approved by the Brookings City Council in early October 2017 and by the City of Brookings Planning Commission in early November.
The structure and its parking lot will cover about half the block, with the building facing Sixth Street and the parking lot extending south toward Fifth Street.
