An $18 million building will help put Dakota State University on the map as a leader in cyber sciences.

Earlier this month, Miles and Lisa Beacom and T. Denny Sanford announced a historic $30 million donation to the Madison university, part of which will go toward the new building.

The Madison Cyber Labs building—MadLabs, for short— will house a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF, pronounced “skiff”), which will allow highly classified government and industry work to be done in Madison.

The South Dakota Board of Regents Building Committee voted Monday to approve an updated facility design plan Monday for the 40,000 square-foot building. The full board is expected to vote on the plan at the next meeting in October.

About half of the building will be dedicated to the SCIF, with other space for administrative spaces, work spaces and meeting rooms.

Construction of the new building is planned to start in the spring of 2018 and wrap up in 2019.
