Confluence Interpretive Center

Williams County, North Dakota

This Interpretive Center is sited at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers. It provides visitors with interpretive exhibits and educational programs regarding the rich history of this important crossroads site.

The circular form gives a strong presence to a relatively small structure sited in a vast western landscape. A wedge cut out of this circular plan opens up views of the confluence from the lobby and creates an outdoor courtyard for lectures and interpretive activities. The building incorporates a number of sustainable design features. Among them are earth sheltering, super-insulation, geothermal heat pumps and passive solar control and orientation.
