Located surrounding Lake Sakakawea in western North Dakota, Fort Berthold Reservation is home to the Three Affiliated Tribes (TAT). In response to the rapid development of the oil industry in the region, it became evident to TAT that new facilities were required for the Department of Transportation. The new 11,000 square-foot DOT Building consolidates a number of functions, including licensing, vehicle registration, and highway patrol, at one location. Amenities include an exercise room for employees and a 3,500 square-foot vehicle storage area.

Durable but cost-effective materials were incorporated into the design. The vehicle storage area is constructed of precast concrete, while the administrative wing of the building is conventional steel frame building, clad in architectural metal panel. The building entrance incorporates flat metal panel, large areas of glass, and cast aluminum signage. The design of the entrance provides a strong focal point and an effective visual link between the administrative and storage areas of the facility.
