University of Minnesota East Bank Recreation Center Expansion

Minneapolis, Minnesota

A $46M, 160,000 sf, 4-story wellness expansion to the existing Recreation Center at the University of Minnesota adds fitness areas, locker rooms, a climbing wall, multi-purpose rooms, a Super Mac gymnasium, administrative space, and the Outdoor Recreation Center.

The expansion wraps the south and east facade of the existing recreation center and is lifted at the entry level to create a plaza and entrances to both the Aquatic Center and the new Recreation and Wellness Center. The interior spaces are filled with natural light that penetrates the four-story atrium. The running track is suspended inside the atrium, with tiers of fitness below. The multi-purpose rooms are ideal for group fitness, yoga, and as meeting rooms. The 30 foot tall climbing wall also has a bouldering area.

The project was completed in conjunction with CannonDesign.
